3 NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STANDARDS Adopted December 2007 Implemented January 2008 –12 standards –Divided under three headings: Context: WHERE Process: HOW Content: WHAT Professional development that improves the learning of all students…

4 NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT STANDARDS Align with NJ Standards for teachers Apply to all educators Should be used for new district PD Plans Should be used for PDP’s

5 Spirit of New PD PD Regulations encourage collaborative learning experiences Toolkit for NJ Educators recommended (on our Intranet) Encourages professional learning to take place in collaborative teams within professional learning communities

6 PD Regulations All teachers accrue PD hours (even first year teachers who hold provisional certificates (mentoring) New teachers must have PDP within 60 days from beginning of assignment Provider system has been eliminated Districts can write multi-year plans starting with plans for 2010- 2011 year.

9 SPDC 3 TEACHERS 1 ADMINISTRATOR The initial terms of charter members of the SPDC shall be staggered to assure continuity with two teacher members serving three years and the other teacher serving two years. Subsequent terms shall be TWO years Members can serve up to three additional terms Terms begin on September 1 and shall expire August 31 of the appropriate year Member vacancy: the president in consultation with building association representatives shall appoint a replacement to serve out the remaining term

10 The Role of the SPDC To work as a professional learning community that connects teaching and learning, in the school and the classrooms, to determine the staff professional learning that will enhance student achievement.

11 The Role of the SPDC Establish group norms Determine goals Develop communication process Assess learning needs of SPDC members Work Collaboratively with LPDC Work collaboratively with other SPDC’s Training (webinars, Toolkit)

12 SPDC: Developing the School PD Plan (DOE Template) Review current PD Plans (will place on Intranet) Collect & organize data Identify the essential focus of student learning Conduct needs assessment Identify goals and outcomes Plan PD activities Monitor school plan Create evaluation plan Work with LPDC

13 School PD Plans Submitted in 2009 (for 2010-11) will Include School Profile Reflection on Previous PD Opportunities Needs Assessment Student Learning Goals PD Opportunities PD Resources Ongoing Assessment and Evaluation

14 Timeline September, October, and November are planning months End of November- SPDC plan submitted

16 LPDC Timeline December, January, and February are planning months. End of February – LPDC plan submitted to BOE for approval After BOE approval – send to County for approval If approved by County- back to BOE for final approval and adoption by Board Resolution Place on Intranet

17 CPDB 15 members Collect and review LPDC plans Provide feedback for the LPDC Communicate exemplary plans to DOE April and May are County Review Months End of July CPDC report submitted to DOE
