5 Ionic Bonding Ionic Bonding  Transfer of valence electrons from a metal atom to a non-metal atom.  Creates a metal ion (cation) and non-metal ion (anion) that are held together by attractive forces (chemical bond)  Chemical bonds are intramolecular forces.  Formation of Ionic Compounds
