You will leave today with a clear picture of… what student centered math is the structure of a math workshop how to incorporate EDM/Common Core how to use assessments to group students organization of materials where to find resources

"In the past, I taught my math lessons as an entirely "whole-class" event. I found myself at the front of the classroom teaching while my students sat at their desks trying to understand the new concepts. There were always some students who found the lesson too easy and, likely out of boredom, tried to do the work before I even finished teaching the lesson. On the other hand, there were also those students who struggled to understand the concepts and felt lost unless I stopped teaching and went to their individual desks to help them. For these reasons, I found that teaching math was frustrating. I was never able to meet the needs of all of my students. That is when my teaching partner suggested we do Math Workshop." ~Beth Newingham

Lesson plans are based on student needs within the standard Students are grouped according to their current skill levels Students move through learning centers that reinforce math standards Dr. Nicki, Author of Guided Math in Action http://youtu.be/mSQSgtQIBTs http://youtu.be/mSQSgtQIBTs

11
Mostly independent Intentional activities that reinforce what was learned at teacher time
14
Flexible small groups Targeted interventions and purposeful practice differentiated for each group ~ 15 minutes with each group. Most time with kids talking or demonstrating their knowledge.
17
Reinforcing skills previously learned through games and manipulatives Exploration of manipulatives or math tools

Using pre-assessments to determine flexible groupings Students may be highly proficient in Geometry but need more support in Number Sense http://em-ccss.everydaymathonline.com/g_login.html http://em-ccss.everydaymathonline.com/g_login.html http://everydaymath.concordnhschools.net/ http://everydaymath.concordnhschools.net/ http://connect.issaquah.wednet.edu/intranet/teaching_a nd_learning/mathematics/default.aspx http://connect.issaquah.wednet.edu/intranet/teaching_a nd_learning/mathematics/default.aspx

What questions do you have? What plan do you have for getting started?

Resources for using technology during math workshop http://emccss.everydaymathonline.com/g_login.html http://emccss.everydaymathonline.com/g_login.html Website that goes along with district’s curriculum. Students log-in to play games that match lessons taught or they can find information using the student reference book. http://www.ixl.com/ http://www.ixl.com/ District paid site. All students have a log-in for home and school use. Great for pairing specific skills with CCSS standards/EDM lessons. http://everydaymath.concordnhschools.net/ http://everydaymath.concordnhschools.net/ This is a great site for finding pre-assessments for each math unit. Locate your grade level (K-6) on the left-hand site and all EDM units are listed underneath it. Not all slides may be needed for each unit so check your end-of-unit test to align. http://www1.center.k12.mo.us/edtech/everydaymath.htm http://www1.center.k12.mo.us/edtech/everydaymath.htm Free website (K-5) that is grade specific and goes along with EDM curriculum. Each resource/activity is listed by the unit and lesson. Look at the top to find your grade level (not all links work). http://www.abcya.com/ http://www.abcya.com/ Free website (K-5) with grade specific activities for math and other subject areas.
