Solving Linear Equations Substitution
2
Find the common solution for the system y = 3x + 1 y = x + 5 There are 4 steps to this process Step 1:Substitute Step 2:Find x Step 3: Find y Step 4:Check your answer
3
Step 1 -- Substitute What does the word substitute mean? How are you going to substitute? y = 3x + 1 y = x + 5 Substitute x + 5 for y and you get: x + 5 = 3x + 1
4
Step 2 – Solve for x How are we going to solve for x? What happens when you move a number to the other side of the equal sign? x + 5 = 3x + 1 Subtract 5 on both sides X = 3x – 4 Subtract 3x on both sides -2x = -4 Divide by -2 on both sides X = 2
5
Step 3 – Solve for y How am I going to solve for y? What am I going to substitute in place of y? Choose one of your equations Y = x + 5 Substitute 2 in place of x Y = 2 + 5 Solve Y = 7
6
Step 4 – Check your answer How do you check your answer? What do I put in place of x? y? Choose an equation Y = x + 5 7 = 2 + 5 Simplify 7 = 7 If your numbers match, then you solved the problem correctly!!
