SWBAT…change numbers from scientific notation to standard notation and vice versa. Agenda 1. Warm-up (10 min) 2. Cornell notes on percents (3 slides) (10 min) 3. FDPs conversions (20 min) Warm-Up Fill out top part of hw#2 HW#2: Percent, decimal and fraction equivalents Wed, 10/6/09

Percents Origin is Latin for “per centum” meaning “per 100” In Italian  “per cento” meaning “by 100” In Spanish  “por ciento”

Converting between percentage and decimal Percentage means "per 100", so 50% means 50 per 100, or simply 50/100 = 0.5. So, to convert from percentage to decimal: divide by 100 (and remove the "%" sign). The easiest way to divide by 100 is to just move the decimal point 2 places to the left and remove the "%" sign!

SWBAT… Write expressions and equations Agenda 1. Warm-up (10 min) 2. Questions from hw#2 (10 min) Warm-Up Set-up an expression and solve: 1) 5% of 160 2) ¼ of 220 3) 2.5% of 20 Set-up an equation: (Optional: Solve for x) 4) What is 58% of $1200? 5) 25% of what number is 28? Study for tomorrow’s quiz – Do practice problems from back of agenda Thurs, 10/7/10

Warm-up 1.)5% of 160 0.05 * 160 = 8 2.)¼ of 220 ¼ * 220 = 55 3.)2.5% of 20 0.025 * 20 = 0.5 4.)What is 58% of $1200? x = 0.58 * 1200 x = $696 5.)25% of what number is 28? 0.25x = 28 0.25 x = 112

Words  Math 1. What is the mathematical symbol for “of?” 2. What is the mathematical symbol for “what number?” 3. What is the mathematical symbol for “is?” 4. What is the mathematical symbol for “yields?” 5. What is the mathematical symbol for “results in?”
