Applications of Systems
3
Two dump trucks are needed to haul topsoil to a landscaping site. One truck has a capacity of 10 tons, the other 12 tons. It takes the trucks 20 trips to haul 226 tons of topsoil. How many trips did each truck make?
4
Define your variables. Variables represent values that you do not know. Read the question at the end of the problem. Write “x = “ and “y = “ as part of your work.
5
How many trips did each truck make? X = # trips made by the 10 ton truck. Y = # trips made by the 12 ton truck.
6
Write a system of equations. Look for equation(s) that represent total amounts. Look for an equation with more specific information. Write down the system you are using.
7
It takes the trucks 20 trips to haul 226 tons of topsoil. x + y =20 One truck has a capacity of 10 tons, the other 12 tons. 10x + 12 y = 226
8
Solve the system. Choose an appropriate method. Graphing Substitution Elimination

Answer the question posed in the problem. What is the problem really asking you to find? Only include this information in your final answer. Write a sentence to answer the question.
11
