The human resources department ensures that an organization: 1. has the right number of staff 2. has the right kind of staff (skills and knowledge) 3. staff available at the right time and place so that organizational needs can be met.

4 5 key responsibilites 1. Recruiting - finding the right people (ex. placing help –wanted ads etc.) 2. Selection- choosing from the candidates (ex. application process) 3. Orient & Train- The process of preparing staff to fulfill their responsibilities 4. Handling Departures and Dismissals 5. Developing Positive Employee Attitudes - evaluating the performance of employees and determining pathways

5 The Challenge How do you identify “good” people? Who are the “good” people within the organization? How do you find good people who are unaware of your organization? What does your organization have to offer “good” people?

6 Recruiting What is recruitment? –Determining the needs of the organization –The process of finding potential candidates for positions in an organization –The Labour Market: is where employees and employers meet –Types of Labour: unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and professional labour

7 recruiting Two Key Questions for Recruiters: Who are the “good” people within the organization? How do you find “good” people who are unaware of your organization? How is this accomplished? Placing ads in the newspapers/websites/job boards Using an employment agency (head hunters) Implementing a leadership development process

8 selection How do you identify “good” people? Selection Selection is the process of screening applicants to determine which meet the needs of the organization

9 orientation and training Orientation and Training addresses the question: What does your organization have to offer “good” people? The human resource department coordinates the orientation and training of new employees. This involves making new employees aware of all policies and procedures in the organization.

10 departures and dismissals Employees may not be a “right fit” for the organization HR needs to help both the employee and the organization by dismissing these staff

11 departures Staff may no longer find the organization a “right fit” and move on to a new industry or to a competitor This can be damaging and costly for the organization HR will often conduct an exit interview to understand the reasons for the departure
