2012

 Describe how the particles change as energy is added or taken away  Understand the relationship between particle motion and temperature  One type of energy is the energy of movement (kinetic) and this can be measured by temperature

 Energy  Temperature  Melting  Freezing  Evaporation  Condensation

 Particles in matter are constantly moving- right?  The amount of motion depends on the energy (we call this kinetic energy)

 Temperature is the average amount of energy in a substance  If the speed of the particles (on average) is greater in a substance than we say its temperature is higher

 What happens as you heat a ice? (a solid)  Ok you know this already, but lets add some science vocabulary.  What happens to the particles of a solid as you add energy?  The particles move faster as a result of adding energy- these faster moving particles spread out and the matter is now a liquid

 Melting?  Freezing?  Evaporation?  Condensation?  Sublimation? http://www.clickandlearn.org/Gr9_Sci/Particle_Theory.htm What is the difference between these?

 What happens to ice as it heat up? This is called _________  Think of another example of melting:  What happens to water as you heat it over the stove? This is called________________  Think of another example of evaporation:

 What happens to a pond when winter temperatures get below 0 ○ C? This is called ___________  Think of another example of Solidification:  What happens on the mirror after you take a long hot shower? This is called ___________  Think of another example of condensation:

One more quick movie for review! As you watch this quick film, think about the vocabulary that they are using. Do you use this vocabulary at home? In your own language? How does this science apply to you? Do you use it everyday?

1. How is energy connected to particle movement? 2. What is temperature a measure of? 3. What happens to the particles when a solid turns into a liquid? 4. What is this process called? 5. Describe the difference between condensation and evaporation.
