Tonight, we will… view a snapshot of the second grade curriculum. know ways that you can be involved with you child’s classroom and school. understand the expectations of a Second Grader at Thompson Elementary.

Planner Expectations: Parents and teachers will check planners daily We will use the planner and the green daily folder as a communication tool between home and school. Parents will sign or initial each day stating that their child has read 20 minutes and completed his/her homework for the day.

Volunteers Volunteers are ALWAYS welcome at Thompson Elementary and in our classroom. You may volunteer services, time or supplies. Please contact your child’s teacher or PTA directly in order to get this started. You may volunteer here at school or in the comfort of your own home. Watch D.O.G.S.-Dads, Uncles, Grandpas Background check is available online at www.nisdtx.org

Homework Will be assigned each Friday. We will send this home in the green daily folder on Friday in a page protector. It will be due the following Friday, so that students can do their homework around their weekly schedule. Homework should take no more than 30 minutes. Read at least 20 minutes each night. Math-Practice and repetition of what has been taught here at school..

Tuesday News Day Folders Each Tuesday the students will bring home their Tuesday News Day Folders. These folders will contain important flyers from the PTA, and notes from school/teacher. We ask that you check these each Tuesday, sign the inside, and return them with your child on Wednesday.

Birthday Celebrations If you would like to help your child celebrate their birthday at school you may bring cupcakes to the front office which must be store bought to be enjoyed at the end of the day.

Field Trip Procedures All field trips are related directly to the curriculum and student learning. Parent supervision is imperative for instruction, supervision and safety of all students. However, some field trips may not accommodate other guests.

Attendance Excellent attendance is strongly encouraged and recognized each six weeks. Whenever your child must be absent, we ask that you call the school office to report the absence at (817)698-3800. If you would like to pick up your child’s missed work, please call the school office prior to 9:00 am.

More Text and Fewer Pictures Increase Fluency (60 WPM- 90 WPM) Independent Reading Stamina (25 minutes or longer) DRA level 16 – 28 Variety of Genres – increasing Informational Texts Comprehension Focus on noticing detail and it’s importance in both Reading and Writing

What do we want your children to know? Math Recall and apply basic addition and subtraction facts, counting money and telling time. Use various math tools to solve a problem such as a number line, pictures, objects, or words. “What plan should I use to solve that problem?” Students show a variety of ways to solve a problem and justify their thinking (acting it out, looking for patterns, guessing and checking). Evaluate our work to see if it is reasonable. Double-check their work. Engage the range of learners in understanding math and guide them to identify it in our everyday lives.

Technology Students will be using a variety of technology in the classroom to create projects and enhance their learning, such as: –The Internet –PowerPoint –MovieMaker –Blogs/wikispaces –Distance Learnings –And much, much more!!

Conferences We will have at least two parent/teacher conferences this year. One in the Fall and one in the Spring.
