Microscopic World

What do they do? Write the functions of Lenses Coarse & fine focus Mirror Rotating nose piece

How we use microscopes To look at things under a microscope they need to be put on a glass slide. They may need a drop of water on them with a thin coverslip on top to hold them flat.

Care needed! Start with the lowest magnification objective (bottom) lens Put your glass slide on the stage and focus the microscope using the coarse focus knob.

Higher Magnification To get higher magnification, change the objective lens and focus using the fine focus. CAUTION watch from the side to make sure you do not get too close to the slide.

Look at these & draw neat simple diagrams of these! Use sticky tape to put a small piece of colour magazine on a slide Use sticky tape to hold a hair on a slide Use sticky tape to hold a tiny piece of damp tissue on a slide

Draw some more Use sticky tape to hold some sand on a slide Use sticky tape to hold some flower pollen on a slide

How far can you see? Put a clear ruler under low power and measure how far across the bit you can see is It is ___ mm across.

Estimate Estimate how wide a hair is ______ mm How much you see under a microscope depends on the magnification. To work out how magnified something is multiply the magnification of the top and bottom lenses.

Try this! 10x top lens and 10x bottom lens means 100x magnification What is the magnification of your microscope? ___________

Draw a neat simple pencil diagram Write the smallest letter e on a tiny piece of paper. Look at it under low power. Is it the way round you expected?_______ How does this affect the way you move things under a microscope?__________

Onion Cells Peel off a little piece of very thin onion tissue Spread it on a slide Add one drop of water and a coverslip Draw what you see under high power

Pond Slime Put a small piece of pond slime (green algae) on a slide with a drop of water and a coverslip. Draw what you see under high power.

Cork cells Slice a piece of cork as thinly as you can using a razor blade. CAUTION sharp Lay it dry on a slide. Draw what you see under high power.

Cells All living things are made from cells Cells are only produced from other cells Plant cells are different from animal cells, but both types of cells have many features in common.

Draw blood cells Put a drop of meat blood on a slide and add a coverslip. Draw what you see under high power.

Draw your cells Use a clean finger to gently wipe inside your cheek and then smear it on a slide. Add a drop of methylene blue to make the cells easier to see and add a coverslip. Draw what you see under high power.

Draw these Draw labelled diagrams of plant and animal cells List the differences between plant and animal cells
