TURN IN YOUR BELLRINGER!

May 22, 2009 AGENDA: 1 – Bellringer 2 – Powerpoint: Biodiversity 3 – Activity: Problem Solving Lab 5.1 HOMEWORK 1.Finish p 115 (1 – 3) of the Problem Solving Lab

New Vocabulary Biodiversity Extinction Endangered Species Threatened Species Habitat Fragmentation Edge Effect Habitat Degradation Acid Precipitation Ozone Layer Exotic Species

Biodiversity: the variety of species in an area

Endangered vs. Threatened Species Endangered Species = numbers become so low that extinction is possible. Threatened Species = A population is likely to become endangered.

Habitat Fragmentation: separation of wilderness areas from other wilderness areas.

Edge Effect: different conditions along the boundaries of an ecosystem.

Habitat Degradation: damage to a habitat by pollution.

Acid Precipitation: rain, snow, sleet and fog with low pH values.

Ozone Layer: absorbs some of the ultraviolet waves striking the atmosphere.

Exotic Species (aka… invasive species): species not native to that area.
