Who came before and after him, and what were their Political parties? Benjamin Harrison (Republican) preceded him and William McKinley (Republican) followed him 5. Were there any unusual circumstances surrounding his ascent to the presidency? If so, describe the situation in specific detail. The debate over coinage and the Tariff continued. Cleveland wanted to lower, but not remove the tariff. Also – Benjamin Harrison’s wife Caroline died during the campaign effectively ending Harrison’s direct participation. He abandoned his parties Free Silver ideals opening the door for Populist William Jennings Bryan’s nomination against William McKinley. He was not renominated.

Repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. 1894 – Wilson-Gorman Act, Pullman Strike, Income Tax Act of 1894 1895 – Pollock V. Farmers Loan and Trust 1896 – Utah admitted to the Union.

Foreign Policy and Events 1893 – Condemned annexation of Hawaii and US participation in the overthrow of Liliuokalani. Halted the annexation of Hawaii.
