6 States that Remained in the Union the Union consisted of 23 states and 22,000,000 people Pennsylvania New Jersey Connecticut Massachusetts New Hampshire New York Rhode Island Vermont Ohio Indiana Illinois Maine Michigan Iowa Wisconsin California Minnesota Oregon Delaware Maryland Kentucky Missouri

7 States that seceded and formed the Confederate States of America the Confederacy consisted of 11 states and only 9,000,000 people which included 3,500,000 slaves South Carolina Mississippi Florida Alabama Georgia Louisiana Texas Virginia Arkansas North Carolina Tennessee

8 Border States Delaware Industries used by North, never threat to leave Maryland split between CSA and USA sympathizers Union troops kept the state in the USA Kentucky Officially neutral but literally split in two State had two capitols-one CSA, one USA Missouri Neutral but Union invasion pushed many to CSA side

9 How many Americans fought? The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000

10 How many Americans died? Union losses, by the best estimates: Battle deaths: 110,070 Disease, etc.: 250,152 Total = 360,222 Confederate losses, best estimates: Battle deaths: 94,000 Disease, etc.: 164,000 Total = 258,000
