1 20 May 2011  Identify “Bloody Sunday.”  Who, What, When, and Why?  If you were part of “Bloody Sunday” how would you have reacted (Solider / Protester)?

2 Bloody Sunday  Father Gapon leads factory workers on peaceful march to St. Petersburg to give a petition to Nicholas II.  100 + ended up dead because of actions of soldiers.

3 Revolution of 1905  Sparked by Bloody Sunday  Riots and strikes broke out  Peasants looted and burned homes of landowners  Nicholas II set up an elected assembly called the Duma to resolve conflict, but it had very little real power.  Inequality and oppression remained.

4 Russo-Japanese War 1904-05  Russia loses to Japan.  Russia loses control of Korea and Manchuria  1 st time a “European Power” loses in modern time to an East Asian country.  Brings about more discontent in Russia.

5 Answer the guided reading questions for 32.5  How has geography influenced the history of Eastern Europe?  What empires competed to dominate Eastern Europe?  What role did nationalism play in Eastern Europe? (Look at Poland, Hungary, and the Balkans)  How did the 2 World Wars shape developments in this region?
