RHETORICAL DEVICES & TERMS CHIASMUS, ATMOSPHERE, & DICHOTOMY
2
CHIASMUS Chiasmus is “a reversal in the order of words in two otherwise parallel phrases” Two clauses are balanced against each other to create an artistic effect The first clause is simply reversed both grammatically and logically to create the parallel clause For example, the common phrase, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going!”, is a simple example of a chiasmus. Another example of chiasmus would be, “one should work to live, not live to work!” Chiasmus and antimetabole are very similar, although chiasmus does not use repetition of words or phrases in either clause

ATMOSPHERE Atmosphere is simply the type of feelings a narrative text elicits from its readers Things such as background, settings, objects, and even foreshadowing all can factor in into atmosphere “The woman raised her hands and stared at them; stared through them. Her voice was soft but tense. “Blood on his hands.” Her own hands were clean and pale.” Those lines draw the reader’s attention and create an emotional response, which is the point of atmosphere
4
DICHOTOMY Dichotomy simply divides something into two equal and contradictory parts. Dichotomy is used by writers to generate conflict within their narrative texts. Some generic examples of dichotomy include: good and evil, real and imaginary, male and female, etc.
