Continental expects to increase system uptime, implement new services in minutes, and save up to $1.5 million a year in hardware, software, labor, implementation, and operational costs. High system reliability for better service Easier to manage Virtual desktop infrastructure Continental has been evaluating Windows Server 2008 R2 features like enhanced Hyper-V, Remote desktop services and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) technology for server and client computer virtualization. Within the first year, Continental plans to expand its VDI by at least 2,000 desktops to support a critical business unit. Continental Airlines understands the critical importance of using information technology to move ahead in the competitive, rapidly changing commercial airline market. Continental continued looking for ways to get the most value from its physical and virtual assets. Continental Airlines Streamlines Operations, Cuts Costs with Virtualization Solution “When you combine capital asset savings, reduced implementation time and costs, and the operational savings from higher uptime, it’s easy to sell upper management on the benefits of Windows Server 2008 R2.” Jason Foster, Systems Architect and Director of Technology, Continental Airlines

CCO has cut costs by eliminating its virtual private network and has seen a 43 percent savings in wide area network (WAN) bandwidth. Cost savings: Direct access: $40k/year Branch Cache: $20k Improved Productivity Better Security In June 2008, CCO upgraded its servers to Windows Server 2008 R2, replacing its VMware virtualization solution. To simplify remote access, CCO upgraded its laptop computers to the Windows® 7 operating system and began using two new features of Windows Server 2008 R2: DirectAccess and BranchCache™ Convergent Computing (CCO) employees are mobile and need remote access to the CCO network. They faced challenges for Access, connection costs, delays and security. CCO needed a cost- effective solution that would give employees quick access to the corporate network. IT Consulting Firm Simplifies Remote Network Access, Saves $200,000 a Year “Using Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta, we accomplished a whole year’s worth of IT projects in the first quarter of 2009—even in this tight economy…. We couldn’t be more pleased.” Rand Morimoto, President, Convergent Computing

Dell Solutions have the ability to save their customers money through power savings, virtualization, extended hardware life, and efficient software spending. Reduced power consumption Extended hardware life Reduced software spending In April 2008, Dell started helping customers design implementations that use Windows Server® 2008 R2 features l to achieve business goals Hyper-V Power Management Direct Access Companies that seek infrastructure consulting from Dell often want to cut expenditures. Dell wanted to offer a robust set of solution offerings that customers could use to reduce their overall expenditures. Dell Helps Customers Reduce Spending on Power, Hardware, and Software “With virtualization and the increased efficiency of Windows Server 2008 R2, customers can extend hardware life and reduce costs.” Terry Storey, Senior Global Architect, Dell Microsoft Practice

Lionbridge has cut electricity costs by 75 percent in its virtualized environment, decreased hardware expenses, and tripled server infrastructure in the existing floor space. Faster server deployment Reduced IT costs Centralized management Lionbridge is upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter to take advantage of enhancements such as Live Migration to reduce application offline Larger virtualization ratio of 350 servers on 19 physical machines Centralized Management Lionbridge Technologies faced the challenges of a growing company ;grew people from multiple offices often needed to work together in teams. Branch offices faced the challenge of supporting users who needed access to files & applications. Global Firm Cuts Server Hardware and Electricity Costs by Deploying Virtual Servers “Before we implemented Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, server deployment was a time-consuming and labor-intensive process. Now we can set up a virtual machine in as little as 15 minutes.” Oyvind Kaldestad, Vice President of Corporate IT, Lionbridge

Sporton achieved a 30 % improvement in branch data access without expanding bandwidth. I Reduced server hardware spending by more than 50 percent Improved user productivity In August 2008, Sporton implemented Windows Server 2008 R2 in combination with Windows® 7, deploying the new feature called BranchCache™, which locally caches frequently used content on the branch office network. Sporton wanted to control its burgeoning bandwidth costs and extend the life of its existing hardware. The company also hoped to increase employees’ productivity by helping them access network data more quickly and effectively. Certification Company Cuts Bandwidth Costs, Halves Server Hardware Spending “Taking advantage of the BranchCache feature in Windows Server 2008 R2, we can spend $20,000 rather than $50,000 per year on bandwidth by postponing our expansion schedule.” David Feng, IT Director, Sporton International.
