Theory of Plate Tectonics
(NOT continental drift which is an hypothesis) Explains the Formation, Movement, and Subduction of Earth’s plates.
3
Plates Scientists noticed that the continental crust is broken into pieces just like the ocean floor. They called these pieces PLATES Mr. Parr
4
Plate Movement There are 3 ways plates move at their edges 1. Convergent boundary. Two plates move toward each other
5
Plate Movement There are 3 ways plates move at their edges 2. Divergent boundary. Two plates move away from each other like mid-ocean ridges under water= mid-ocean ridge on land = rift valley
6
Plate Movement There are 3 ways plates move at their edges 3. Transform boundary. Two plates move past each other with no change in altitude
