My Curriculum Philosophy By: Mildred Vigil

My first draft’s opening paragraph’s points: My philosophical beliefs about the purpose of school is school should be a place where students can learn. The learning environment a teacher provides for his/her students should be a safe and comfortable learning environment. The subjects taught may vary depending on the age and developmental level of the students you teach.

As I read and learned more about curriculum my opening paragraph’s points looked like this: My philosophical belief about the purpose of school is that school should be a place where students can learn how to become lifelong learners. Teachers need to help students become aware of their own “learning goals and needs” (Tomlinson, 2006).

Opening Paragraph revision cont. The learning environment teachers provide their students plays an important role in getting students to learn. It should be a safe and comfortable learning environment. Every subject can be taught to every student Students need to become owners of their learning process.

Opening Paragraph revision cont. Teachers need to make sure their students’ needs are met so they can help them move on to the cognitive level on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Differentiating instruction to fit the needs and personalities of every student is important for success of every student!

What I realized was everything we do as teachers to prepare for teaching our students is what makes up our Curriculum Development and Curriculum Design

What I learned from writing this paper was the importance of incorporating Century 21 tools into my curriculum development in order to prepare my students for their future. It is also important to use these tools because these are the tools they are familiar with.

I also learned that it is ok to not teach subjects the way they have been taught for years. It is ok to change my teaching style to fit the needs of the students I am teaching.

I learned the importance of Differentiated Instruction in curriculum design.

Curriculum 21 Essential Education for a Changing World was important in teaching me the importance of using technology in teaching.

Integrating Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design helped to show me tools and techniques in differentiating instruction for all my students and how to become more open minded and flexible.

In all, my philosophical belief of curriculum has expanded from being a very vague belief to a better thought out belief that I think will make me a better more efficient teacher.
