1 컴퓨터 교육 2 학기 김혜원 Teaching Networking and Operating System to Information Systems Majors D. Robert Adams and Carl Erickson Department of computer Science and Information Systerms Grand Valley State University

2 Contents 1. Abstract 2. Introduction 3. Course Goals 4. Course Implementation 5. Sample Lab 6. Evaluation 1

3 Computer Science major Teaching networking and operation systems to information systems majors that bridges that gap Business information systems major Abstract Non-technicalTechnical New Model 2

4 Introduction 1 Increase in demand for network administrators Explosive growth of Networks Network administrator? Installing new hardware and software Creating and managing user accounts Installing and maintaining print services Ensuring that the network is running smoothly Ensuring that the computer are communicating efficiently Handling user complaints 3

5 Introduction 2 4 Why? 1.Computer scientists gain a fundamental theoretical knowledge Of operating systems and networks 2.This fundamental Knowledge enables a CS student to learn the high-level managerial aspect required of a network administrator Yet, CS students seem to fill the position of network administrator Traditionally, the role of network administrator has been filled by computer science graduates. CS graduates don ’ t receive special training for that position.

6 Introduction 3 5 the role of network administrator is suited more toward information system graduate than a computer science graduate.

7 Introduction 4 information/computer management deals with the underlying theories and models of computation rather than the principles of information management 5 Information System Computer Science

8 Introduction 5 Why aren ’ t IS graduates Becoming network administrators? Lack the fundamental knowledge of networking and OS But CS course in OS or networking is inappropriate for an IS major -> low-level details of OS and networks -> a significant amount of programming 6

9 Introduction 6 7 New Course 1. A solid grounding in OS and networking theory 2. Providing practical experience in the role of a network administrator

10 Course Goals Two complementary goals 1.Get a solid foundation in the fundamental theories and models of OS and networks. 2.Provide practical hands-on experience administering an actual system. 8 After the course set up and maintain ad network of machines and computer services

11 Course Implementation Information System majors at GVSU Network System Management covers the lower layers of the protocol stack Computer System Management covers the higher layers of the protocol stack 9

12 Course Implementation – Methodology 1  The first half of the semester covers OS  The second half of the semester covers networking 10101010 The lecture and lab are complementary theory behind some concept Lecture pragmatic standpoint Lab

13 Course Implementation – Methodology 2 The purpose of the lecture of the course teach the fundamental Knowledge of OS and networking in the context of administering an network of computers 11111111 The role of the lecturer describe some aspect of OS or networking theory and demonstrate how that theory is applied to a modern OS or network

14 Open source Provide access to the internal workings of all its services Course Implementation – Laboratory Facilities 1 OS other than Windows New experience Command-line interface Reinforce the ideas 12121212 Linux

15  Introduction to UNIX : Files, Processes, Devices,UNIX Tools  Shell Scripts and Perl  Boot Process and OS Initialization  Managing Users and Groups of Users  Managing the CPU, Memory, and Filesystems Course Implementation – Lecture and Lab Material 1 13131313

16 Course Implementation – Lecture and Lab Material 2  Network Protocol Stack and Application Layer : DNS, SMTP, HTTP  Transport Layer and Network Layer  Network Configuration  Configuring a Server  Security 14141414

17 Sample Lab NFS(Network File System) 1. Create a filesystem on a blank floppy disk ->mount, create text file 2. Share floppy filesystem 3. unmount 15151515

18 Evaluation Reaction from students is mixed. The mixture of lecture and lab has been a success The lab material helps to strengthen the ideas talked about in lecture 16161616 permit the student to apply that knowledge in a meaningful way Knowledge application is crucial in the learning process!!
