1.What caused a gas to form on the computer simulation? 2.What caused gas to become a liquid? 3.What caused the liquid to become a solid? Use a highlighter to draw what molecules look like in the three states of matter… GASESLIQUIDS Molecules are packed close together and vibrate in place. Computer AssignmentName: Date: Class #SOLIDS Molecules are close together but can slide past each other. Molecules are free to fly far apart to fill their container. Added HEAT Take away Heat Take away Heat
2
Solids Properties: Definite shape Definite volume Examples: Books, Plate, Pretzel, and Table Particle Diagram: Packed neat and tight Vibrating back and forth
3
Liquids Properties: No definite shape Definite volume Examples: Water and cough syrup Particle Diagram: Packed tightly Slide freely past each other
4
Gases Properties: No definite shape No definite volume Examples: Air, smoke, and oxygen Particle Diagram: Spread far apart Flying everywhere very quickly
5
5 Why does cold water have more mass than an equal volume of hot water? Hot Cold
6
6 KEY QUESTION What is temperature ? Temperature is a measure of the energy of molecules. (how fast or slow molecules are moving)
10
Kelvin scale – based on absolute zero
12
Cohesion – force that holds water molecules together on the surface of liquids, Water molecules stick to each other Adhesion – water molecules stick to other surfaces
13
Conclusions: More water piles up on a penny than you might expect because water is made of tiny particles called molecules and these molecules are attracted to each other. cohesion The attraction between water molecules is called cohesion. Cohesion Cohesion holds water together forming raindrops and also leads to Surface Tension which allows objects like a paper clip or a water strider to “float” on top of the water. Water has many amazing properties that we will learn more about this year!
