The Renaissance Era -The main character in Renaissance architecture is that they study the architecture of the Roman and the Greeks. - So, they adopt the so called Classical detail and ornamentation - However the use of space are different. - The Renaissance doesn’t need large building such as the Sport Arena or the public bath and the build new types of building such as the building for merchants - One of the important things is that space is organized based on proportion, form and rhythm. The Renaissance Era CHARACTERISTICS OF RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE Plan -The plans of Renaissance buildings is usually square and symmetrical. - With proportions which are usually based on a module

The Renaissance Era CHARACTERISTICS OF RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE Façade -Façades are symmetrical on the vertical axis. - Organized by a system of pilasters, arches and entablatures - The columns and windows show a progression towards the centre.

The Renaissance Era CHARACTERISTICS OF RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE Columns and Pilasters -The Roman orders of columns are used:- Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite. - The orders can either be structural or purely decorative.

The Renaissance Era CHARACTERISTICS OF RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE Arches - Arches are always semi- circular or segmental. - Arches are often used in arcades, supported on piers or columns.

The Renaissance Era CHARACTERISTICS OF RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE Dome -Used frequently, as a very large structural feature that is visible from the exterior, - Also for smaller spaces where they are only visible internally. - the dome became an indispensable element in church architecture and for secular architecture, such as Palladio's Villa Rotonda
