24. Oct. 2006 KM3NeT WP2 Meeting, Marseille2 Uli Katz University Erlangen General Considerations Aim of Design Study: Develop detector design optimized for physics sensitivity Figure of merit: Physics sensitivity relative to costs requires cost model comprising (no personnel): Detector Infrastructure Sea operations Operation of detector Maintenance Question to cost model: What will be the costs for a specific detector design at a specific site assuming a certain lifetime? needed to compare different KM3NeT options (together with physics-sensitivity information from WP2) Responsibility: WP1 (Management)

24. Oct. 2006 KM3NeT WP2 Meeting, Marseille3 Uli Katz University Erlangen Specific Requirements for Cost Model High flexibility: allow for easy combination of components (units) to different detector setups at different sites Reliable cost estimates to allow comparison of different KM3NeT options: detailed cost breakdown structure WPs have to provide accurate price tags for each component, operation etc. Interface to simulation software: access to cost information through simulation software

24. Oct. 2006 KM3NeT WP2 Meeting, Marseille4 Uli Katz University Erlangen Vari-Calc Difficult search - only one suitable product found: Vari-Calc from Kutzner Software (originally developed in EU FP3 project) Costs: about 10 kEuro (including installation and adaptation to our specific needs) Server-Client architecture with SQL-Server Direct access to database possible … can be interfaced by other programs Demo version available (buggy, improved version promised)

24. Oct. 2006 KM3NeT WP2 Meeting, Marseille5 Uli Katz University Erlangen Hierarchical multi-level structure of units Principle structure of a unit: Further sub-units for e.g. “legs” down to smallest unit. “Table” is one sub-unit for unit “office” etc. Table total costs = add. costs + sub-units 1 4 table legtabletop screws assembly costs number of sub-units sub-units unit
