V OCABULARY : Imbalance: Inequality between human beings and their environments Life expectancy: How long you can expect to live Literacy rate: percentage of people over 15 who can read Industrialization: business on a large scale where man power is replaced by machines Level of Development: how developed your country is based on 1) industrialized level 2) Life expectancy 3) Literacy rate Developing countries: countries that have most people working in collecting natural resources

W ORLD V IEW Even though all people are believed to be equal their situations rarely are Living conditions depend on where we were born and the wealth of our families Each environment comes with benefits and problems that can affect how we live An example is rural versus urban living

R ICH AND P OOR In our world we have rich countries and poor countries If you take all the salaries in Canada and find the middle average this creates an imaginary line called the median This line splits our citizens into rich and poor. If your family makes less than this line you are considered poor If your family makes more then you are considered rich If your family makes less than 24 000 dollars total then you are below the poverty line

T HE REAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RICH AND POOR Nearly 1.2 billion people (1/5) of the world’s population live on less than 1 dollar a day In rich countries 1 in every 100 Children die before they reach 5, in poor countries it is 20 per 100 Across the world 115 million children ages 6-11 do not go to school 1 out of every 6 people in the world are illiterate 2/3 of that number are women
