Questions and Challenges of the Bologna process Tempus JEP “Introduction of the ECTS at B&H Universities” Prof. dr Mirsad Đonlagić University of Tuzla Sarajevo, 10. 05. – 12. 05. 2006.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.2 Coordination with the European credit allocation system What is the situation like in BH? Diploma recognition process is the same as it was before, nothing has changed. some professors still request absolutely identity of programmes instead programme recognition.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.3 Possibilities of employment after three year studies. Bachelor title Graduate programs offer students basic knowledge and skills which enable students to continue their studies. What do we have in BH? We were not able to provide workplaces for young people after four or five years of studies. In the future?

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.4 Additional two years: MA Title The importance of the first cycle is that during graduate studies a student can choose and take various diploma course/programs. Students who obtained their BAs (after four/year studies) in Tuzla acquire an MA title through an agency in Croatia.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.5 What about BH? Is it possible to change the faculty at which Bologna process has been applied? Faculty of Philosophy in Tuzla and Sarajevo Is state capable to financially support higher education and processes related to it ?

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.6 PhD Title After only three years students who want to obtain new knowledge and deal with scientific work can acquire a PhD title This requires complete change in approach to education of PhD candidates this is the change we are to face in the future

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.7 Possibility of expanding knowledge by combining study programs ?

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.8 The possibility to change faculties during the studies one semester is always worth 30 credits student can not move from Faculty of Philosophy in Tuzla, which implemented ECTS system 3 years ago, to Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, which has also started the ECTS system

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.9 Support to student mobility The problem is it has not been done in a way to create environment to support students’ mobility.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.10 Dynamic teaching process – more teachers in a module Financial means we dispose of do not permit for such changes to take place. What does that actually mean for BH? For instance, there are 100.000 students in BH, if we apply the Bologna process standars we come up with the number of 4000 teachers.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.11 The situation regarding TAs and space/utilities and financing is also challenging. Financing is also inadequate, but we must not make the same mistake as Croatia when they gave incorrect information that 4.6%GDP goes to education.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.12 Less hours of frontal teaching- four hours only This means completing studies faster than before through continuous students’ activities- such as taking exams at the end of each semester.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.13 The possibility of various modules The possibility of various modules according to personal affinities which would be mentioned in the Diploma Supplement.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.14 Quality Assurance System It is not enough to organize something well, you have to make sure things are being carried out in accordance to the set standards.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.15 Students assessing teachers’ performances Certain universities have tried to introduce the polls as regular procedure, but the participation is entirely voluntary.

Sarajevo workshop - 10. 05. - 12.05. 2006.16 The fact is that the law has not been adopted yet at the state level, but I strongly support the proposal for all universities to begin with the talks, to start working on curricula harmonization, therefore creating necessary conditions for something which would, among other things, regulate the law, and that is students’ mobility. I want to be optimist and believe that we can initiate academic community.
