How would you find out if you had HPV?
15
Barren River District Health Department How do I get tested?
The Pap-HPV Test Usually done at the same time The test collects cells from your cervix to check for abnormal cells It also sends a sample to the lab to find out if the HPV virus is present Unfortunately men can’t be tested for HPV now. Pap test should be done annually when a woman starts going to the GYN. 21+

No cell changes were found in your cervix
Result Normal Unclear Abnormal What does that mean? No cell changes were found in your cervix Your cervical cells look like they could be abnormal This may or may not be related to HPV Cell changes were found in your cervix The changes were caused by HPV You probably DO NOT have cervical cancer What should I do? Keep up with your annual Pap Test to make sure your cells stay this way Get an HPV Test to see what caused the cell changes Minor changes will usually go away on their own More serious changes should be monitored by your doctor Since statistically 1 in 4 of you will get HPV at some point let’s understand what Pap smear results actually mean.

So there’s a pretty good chance you’ll encounter at least 1 type of HPV in your life… But how can you prevent more serious forms of HPV that cause cancer and warts?
18
Barren River District Health Department How can I prevent HPV?
Vaccinate with the 3-dose series! Gardasil ® 9 protects against the nine strains of HPV that cause: Cervical Cancer 90% Vulvar cancer Vaginal cancer 85% Anal cancer 90-95% High-grade cervical pre-cancers 80% Low-grade cervical lesions 50% Genital warts If you already got the series when you were younger, there’s a good chance it was the quadrivalent vaccine that protects you against 4 types of HPV (6, 11, 16, 18) The new vaccine added immunity to types (31, 33, 45, 52, and 58). If you already had the shots there’s no reason to go back and get the new series.
