Phoenicians lived in a region east of Mediterranean Sea, later named Palestine. Area of Palestine called Caanan was home to Hebrews (later called Jews) Their history, legends and moral laws are a major influence in Western culture Similar traditions shared by Christians & Muslims Monotheism the doctrine or belief that there is only one god. Religion in the Roman Empire State Religion in Roman Empire: Paganism- used to refer to polytheistic religious traditions (Worship of Gods/Goddesses) Tended to be impersonal & practiced without emotion Hebrews (Jews) in Palestine region came under Roman control in 63 B.C. Were seen as outsiders, sacrilege to people of the Empire Often times enslaved for their beliefs
