Scientific Notation N SPI 0806.2.3 Use scientific notation to compute products and quotients.
2
Standard Form Look at this example and put it into standard form. 2.45 x 10 8 2.45 Move the decimal 8 places to the right! YOUR ANSWER SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS 245,000,000
3
Standard Form to Scientific Notation 30,500,000 Put this example into scientific notation! But wait where is the decimal?? Correct! At the end of the number!! Lets move it to the left! 30,500,000.
4
YOUR ANSWER 3.0500000 X 10n What does the “n” stand for? The “n” is the variable that represents the exponent! How many times did we move the decimal? 7 The answer is: 3.05 X 107
5
Multiplication with Scientific Notation Lets do this problem and at the end put your answer in scientific and standard notation! (5 x 10 -8 )(2.9 x 10 2 ) = (5 x 2.9)(10 -8 X 10 2 ) Commutative and Associative Properties = 14.5 x 10 -6 Product of Powers = (1.45 x 10 1 ) x 10 -6 14.5 = 1.45 x 10 1 = 1.45 x (10 1 x 10 -6 ) Associative Property = 1.45 x 10 -5 or 0.0000145 ANSWER
6
Division with Scientific Notation 1.2789 x 10 9 5.22 x 10 5 5.22 x 10 5 Split up the division problem into two separate division problems! 1.2789 x 10 9 5.22 10 5 5.22 10 5
7
1.2789 x 10 9 5.22 10 5 5.22 10 5 =0.245 x 10 4 Divide =(2.45 x 10 -1 ) x 10 4 Move the decimal to the appropriate position. =2.45 x (10 -1 x 10 4 ) Group and calculate! =2.45 x 10 3 or 2450 ANSWER
