3 Scientific Notation A method for expressing and working with, very large or very small numbers Short hand method for writing numbers Numbers in scientific notation are made up of three parts:  Coefficient  Base  Exponent 5.67 x 10 3 coefficient base exponent

4 Following conditions must be true 1. The coefficient’s decimal must be after the first non-zero number For example: 04.5 Not: 53.6 2. The base must be 10 3. The exponent shows the number of decimal places that the decimal needs to be moved

5 Change to scientific notation Ex 1: 56,700 The coefficient’s decimal is after the 5 The coefficient will then read 5.67 Remember, the decimal is at the end of the final zero The decimal will move 4 places to the right, making the exponent equal to 4. Answer equals 5.67 x 10 4

6 Change to scientific notation Ex 2: 194 (HW Problem #6) The coefficient decimal is after the 1 The coefficient will then read 1.94 Remember, the decimal is at the end of the four The decimal will move 2 places to the right, making the exponent equal to 2. Answer equals 1.94 x 10 2

7 Change to scientific notation Ex 3: 0.0000159 (HW Problem #9) The coefficient’s decimal is after the 1 The coefficient will then read 1.59 The decimal will move 5 places to the left, making the exponent equal to -5. Answer equals 1.59 x 10 -5

8 Change to standard notation Ex 1: 5.67 x 10 3 = The exponent tells us to move the decimal three places to the right from where it’s currently at Remember, 10 3 = 10 * 10 * 10 = 1,000 So, 5.67 x 1,000 = 5,670 5,670

9 Change to standard notation Ex 2: 7 x 10 4 (HW Problem #10) The exponent tells us to move the decimal four places to the right from where it’s currently at So, 7 x 10 4 = 70,000

10 Change to standard notation Ex 3: 5.3 x 10 -4 The exponent tells us to move the decimal four places to the left (from where it’s currently at) so, 5.3 x 10 -4 = 0.00053

11 Change to standard notation Ex 4: 42 x 10 4 = The exponent tells us to move the decimal four places to the right (from where it’s currently at) So, 42 x 1 0 4 = 420,000

12 What do you notice about the sign of exponents and the size of the number? AHA!
