British Museum Established in 1753 with the donation of 71,000 objects from the collection of Sir Hans Sloane
4
The British Museum was established in 1753, largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloane.
5
A domed, circular reading room was added in 1857, and the White Wing, designed by architect John Taylor, was added 30 years later.
6
Big Ben The name Big Ben actually refers to the clock's hour bell, the largest of the clock's five bells, the others being used as quarter bells.
7
There were two bells cast as the clock tower's hour bell. The hour bell was probably named after Benjamin Clockface Hall or Benjamin Caunt.
8
The clockfaces have a diameter of almost 7.5m. The hour hand is 2.7m long and the minute hand is 4.25m long.
9
Tower Bridge Plans for the Tower Bridge were devised around 1876 when the east of London became extremely crowded and a bridge across the Thames in that area of the city seemed a necessity.
10
Five contractors and nearly 450 workers were involved in the construction of the 265 meter long bridge.
11
Nowadays it is raised about 1,000 times a year.
12
Tower Bridge lifts are pre-scheduled (for cruise ships, etc) so visitors can check the bridge's website to find out when it will rise and lower.
13
Currently the bridge is undergoing a renovation project that should be completed in 2012
14
London Eye T he futuristic looking capsules, accommodating up to 25 passengers, were transported all the way from France by train through the chunnel.
15
Each egg-shaped capsule is 8 meters long and weighs 500kg. A complete turn takes about 30 minutes.
16
Many famous landmarks are clearly visible, including the Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament.
17
Tower of London Construction of the Tower of London was initiated in 1070 by William the Conqueror, shortly after his victory at Hastings in 1066.
18
Today the Tower of London is best known for its Crown Jewels.
19
Tower was also a royal residence: several kings lived here, especially during turbulent times when the donjon seemed a lot safer than the palace in Westminster.
20
Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum In 1884, several decades after Maria Tussaud’s death, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum moved to its current location on London's Marylebone
21
Today it has expanded to many more cities including Las Vegas, New York City, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Washington DC
