Earth Chemistry
2
Matter – Can neither be created nor destroyed. Anything that has mass and volume (takes up space) Elements -a substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical change ex.fires burn wood - wood changes it physical form but the elements do not change
3
H – HydrogenAu - GoldNi - Nickel Cu – Copper*O – Oxygen*Fe - Iron N - Nitrogen*Si – Silica C - Carbon *Al - Aluminum*K – PotassiumU - Uranium * Mg- Magnesium*Ca – Calcium *Na - Sodium *These are the ones that by mass and volume make up 98% of Earth's Crust
5
Isotope - Same number of proton, different amount of neutrons Molecule - Atoms that are chemically bonded. Compound- More than one element O and Si make up ~75% of Earth's crust 47% O28% Si by weight 94% O 1% Si by volume O + Si -> quartz O + Si + Al -> clay Silicates - the most common rock forming minerals in the earth's crust.
