Waxing & Waning Why does the moon change shape during the month? It depends on the moon’s position in relation to the sun and Earth. As the moon orbits the Earth, we see different parts of the half that is lit by the sun. The different shapes are called phases. Half of the moon is always lit by the sun, but as the moon revolves around the Earth, we see different parts of the lit half of the moon.
