The moon moves from east to west across the sky in an arc.

1. New Moon- no lit part can be seen

2. Waxing- lit to the right, lit side growing.

The phase is a crescent when less than half appears lit and called gibbous when more than half appears lit.

When half of the moon appears lit this is known as a quarter.
