THEME
10
Definition of Theme It’s what the story reveals about people and life.
A discovery of a truth about our own existence. Theme is what a story is REALLY about. It is the meaning or lesson you take away from the story.
11
Where does it say what the theme is?
The author does NOT state it directly. The author wants you to DISCOVER it yourself as you read.
12
To help you identify the theme of a story:
How has the main character changed over the course of the story? What has the main character discovered? Which scenes are important? What ideas about life do they suggest? What is the story’s title?
13
Possible Themes Friendship Loyalty Courage Loneliness The Power of One
Family Responsibility
14
Possible Themes for these stories:
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi Monsters are Due on Maple Street
15
Thesis Statement A sentence with a subject and opinion (also called commentary). This sentence is USUALLY the last sentence in the introduction paragraph.
16
Thesis Statement Introduction paragraph should focus on theme and the change in main character.
17
Introduction paragraph

Example Intro for Monsters
Fear is a powerful emotion. It can make you do things that you would not normally do. In “Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”, by Rod Serling, fear causes Charlie to behave in an irrational way.
19
Sample Intro Rikki Anyone can be a hero. You don’t have to be big, strong, and powerful. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, Rikki proves that heroism can come in very small packages.
