Attorneys repeatedly brought the desire for Voice Recognition to management General consensus within legal industry that VR could increase productivity Pre-pilot metrics established: Document generation time (dictate/type) Document review/correction time Volume of documents by day Volume of proprietary systems data entry by day Notable averages: 19 minutes/document, 5-6 documents per day, 10 minutes/system data entry

Pilot Overview 12 users, mixed attorney/paralegal One-on-one training provided by one of two Legal Systems trainers specializing in Dragon. Six months of usage was analyzed (2000) Lessons learned: a.Headsets b.Sound cards c.Hardware specifications

Successes a. 10 of 12 users still use the product daily b. All participants agreed creation of traditional dictation is much faster with Dragon Post-pilot metrics a.Avg. document generation time: 50% reduction after 90 days (8-10 mins.) 70% reduction after 180 days (6 mins.)

April 22-23, 2002ScanSoft Solutions 2002 Conference Post-pilot metrics, continued Proprietary systems data entry time reduced 70% to 3 minutes Revision/correction time nearly eliminated altogether Dragon used for about 80% of all documents, 50% of e-mail Not used for system navigation due to slow performance Many issues or stumbling blocks related to limitations of Windows 95, Office 95, and Dragon 4 Most common user response: “I use it daily and believe it has made me significantly more productive.”

L imited “Dictation mode” of Word XP To quote Microsoft, “Speech recognition is not designed for completely hands-free operation; you'll get the best results if you use a combination of your voice and the mouse or keyboard.” Available but not supported by Liberty I/S Dragon NaturallySpeaking remains the corporate standard; formal rollout in 2003.

April 22-23, 2002ScanSoft Solutions 2002 Conference Other Products OmniPage Pro is the corporate standard for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Currently evaluating electronic forms solutions – possible OmniForm candidate PaperPort is very popular with solo and small firm attorneys. May be of some use in an enterprise environment depending on infrastructure (mobile trial notebook supplementing a large DMS) Future efficiency: speech-enabled time entry (Carpe Diem, DTE)
