AIM: What is Predicting? Vocabulary: EXTRAPOLATION INTERPOLATION TABLES GRAPHS DATA

What is Predicting? Graphing Data WHO knows how to GRAPH Data?

What is Predicting? What is Data ? Data is your observations when conducting an experiment or preliminary scientific investigation

What is Predicting? How is Data presented ? Data is usually presented in: 1.Written descriptive format 2.Tables 3.Graphs 4.Or a combination of all of these

What is Predicting?  Imagine this experiment:  Suppose we wanted to track the rate of growth of a type of tomato plant  We plant the plant  Then, we record its growth each day over a number of days ü

What is Predicting? Our Tomato plant Grew to height of: 2 inches on day 2, 4 inches on day 5, 8 inches on day 10, 10 inches on day 15, 14 inches on day 20 This is a descriptive format What would be a better way to present the data?

Plant Height 2 4 8 10 14 Day of Growth 2 5 10 15 20 Table of Plant Days vs. Plant Height: Is this format better for reviewing our results then the descriptive formant?

Plant Height 2 4 8 10 14 Day of Growth 2 5 10 15 20 Table of Plant Days vs. Plant Height: This is called a data table. Data tables make it easier to understand your observations

What is Predicting? DATA TABLES: ALSO MAKE IT EASIER TO GRAPH. IT IS EASIER TO GRAPH FROM A DATA TABLE, RATHER THAN TRYING TO GRAPH FROM A DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH.

Draw your Axis Y-axis X-axis

Label Your X Axis: Y-axis X-axis Label the Days Days 5 10 15 20 25 `

Label Your Y Axis: Y-axis X-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 X-axis Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16

Now Plot Your Points Y-axis X-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16

Now Draw Your Line Y-axis X-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16

LASTLY: TITLE YOUR GRAPH Y-axis X-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16

Y-axis X-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 The Height of Mr. Zim’s Tomato Plant Plant #1

Alternative Title for the Graph Y-axis X-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 (X vs Y): Days of Growth Vs. Plant Height

What is Predicting? Based upon YOUR graph What would the plant height be of Mr. Z’s plant on day 7

Plant Height on Day 8? Y-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 (X vs Y): Days of Growth Vs. Plant Height Plant #1 6.5 inches

What is Predicting? Based upon YOUR graph What would be the plant height of the plant 1 on day 14

Plant Height on Day 14? Y-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 (X vs Y): Days of Growth Vs. Plant Height = 9.5 inches

What is Predicting? Based upon YOUR graph What would be the plant height of plant #1 on day 23? How did you figure that out?

Plant #1 Height on Day 23? Y-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 2 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 (X vs Y): Days of Growth Vs. Plant Height =15 inches

What is Predicting? Interpolate. To estimate a value between two known values.

Y-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 2 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 (X vs Y): Days of Growth Vs. Plant Height EXAMPLE of INTERPOLATION

What is Predicting? Extrapolate An estimated value which follows logically from the known values To infer or estimate by extending or projecting known information.

Y-axis Plant Height in inches 6 4 8 10 2 12 Days 5 10 15 20 25 ` 14 16 (X vs Y): Days of Growth Vs. Plant Height Example of EXTRAPOLATION

Y-axis Weight in pounds 200 250 150 Height (feet) 5 5.5 6 6.5 300 (X vs Y): Height of Football Player Vs. Weight Extrapolate the weight of a player who is almost 7 feet tall?

Y-axis Weight in pounds 200 250 150 Height (feet) 5 5.5 6 6.5 300 (X vs Y): Height of Football Player Vs. Weight Interpolate the weight of a player who is almost 5 feet 9 inches tall?
