Charles Grandison Finney By Jeff Morris and Will Gibbs

Biography Born in Warren, Connecticut in 1792 Lived on frontier of New York for most of child hood with little to no religious teachings As a law student in his mid-twenties, he realized his calling to become a preacher of the Presbyterian church Spent many years spreading the teachings of the awakened Christianity and believed salvation was meant for all. Became a professor at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1851, and stayed until 1866 when he retired. He died August 16, 1875 Was considered by many the father of modern Revivalism

The Movement Within the second great awakening was the more specific field Finney worked in, revivalism and focused on society movements Finney worked to create more interest in Christianity Taught a simplified form of Christianity, more directly taken from the bible Also an abolitionist and worked against slavery

Philosophy Finney rejected the traditional Calvinistic belief that salvation was only available to the elect Supported the teachings of the teacher but wanted to add a new and improved message to the public One could only be saved through the acceptance of God’s word The sinner chooses to sin and the repentant chooses to repent

Contributions to Movement Finney employed “New Measures” to evoke highly emotional response Included: Public praying of women in mixed- sex audiences, services held daily, the preacher’s use colloquial language, praying for people by name, and Immediate church membership for converts

Lasting Effects Addressed and emphasized equality, free will of man, and self-governance The largely growing movement worried more orthodox colleagues as the ministry moved from small town to big cities such as Philadelphia, Boston, and New York
