Metals
2
What is a metal? METALS ARE ELEMENTS THAT ARE SHINY, MALLEABLE, DUCTILE, AND GOOD CONDUCTORS OF HEAT AND ELECTRICITY.
3
What does it mean for a metal to be malleable & ductile ? MALLEABLE MEANS THAT A METAL CAN BE HAMMERED OR ROLLED INTO SHEETS DUCTILE MEAN THEY CAN BE DRAWN INTO WIRES
4
In which groups are metals located on the periodic table? Groups 1-13 and some of groups 14-16
5
What occurs when metals bond with non-metals, specifically looking at gaining and losing electrons? Non metals tend to gain electrons, because they want to be like the noble gases, so it is easier to get a full valence level by accepting rather than kicking an electron out. Metals tend to lose an electron, because it is easier for them to get a full valence level by kicking out an electron.
6
Define Ion AN ION IS AN ATOM OR MOLECULE WITH A NET ELECTRIC CHARGE DUE TO THE LOSS OR GAIN OF ONE OR MORE ELECTRONS.
7
When a metal bonds with a non-metal which on become a positive ion and which one become a negative ion? THE METAL BECOME A POSITIVE ION BECAUSE IT TENDS TO KICK OUT AN ELECTRON LEAVING MORE PROTONS MAKING IT MORE POSITIVE THE NON-METAL BECOME A NEGATIVE ION BECAUSE IT TENDS TO ACCEPT ELECTRONS.
8
What is Metallic Bonding? POSITIVELY CHARGED METALLIC IONS ARE SURROUNDED BY A SEA OF ELECTRONS.
9
What role does metallic bonding play in determining how malleable & ductile a metal will be? BECAUSE THE OUTER- LEVEL ELECTRONS ARE NOT HELP TIGHTLY TO THE NUCLEUS OF AN ATOM BUT MOVE FREELY THIS ALLOWS ATOMS TO BE MORE FLEXIBLE. ALLOWING METALS TO BE SHAPED
10
Alki- Metals are different? THE ARE SOFT THEY ALSO HAVE 1 VALENCE ELECTRON WHICH MAKES IT SUPER REACTIVE
11
Alkaline Earth Metals? UNIQUE BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAVE TWO VALENCE ELECTRONS AND THEY ARE NOT FOUND FREELY IN NATURE.
12
Transition Metals? THEY ARE NOT VERY REACTIVE AND HELP CREATE MANY ALLOYS WE CANNOT LIVE WITH OUT. TRANSITION METALS ARE LOCATED IN GROUPS 3-13
13
Ionic Bond VS. Covalent Bond IONIC BONDING: IS THE COMPLETE TRANSFER OF VALENCE ELECTRON(S) BETWEEN ATOMS COVALENT BONDING: IS A CHEMICAL BOND THAT INVOLVES THE SHARING OF ELECTRON PAIRS BETWEEN ATOMS
