1 OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION Enforcement Division CALEA AND THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS

2 WHAT IS CALEA? The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) was created in 1979 through combined efforts of four national law enforcement organizations.

3 THE PURPOSE OF CALEA The purpose is two-fold: –Develop a set of standards in police management and services. –Establish and administer a process through which law enforcement agencies can voluntarily demonstrate that they meet those standards.

4 THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS The process can be broken down into two parts: –The Standards The building blocks around which everything else evolves. –The Process Provides the blueprint and mortar to shape the standards into forms that are sturdy, useful and lasting for the agency.

5 5 PHASES OF ACCREDITATION Application Self-Assessment (459 Standards) On-Site Assessment Commission Review/Decision Maintaining Compliance –(Re-accreditation every 3 years)
