2 Reactions to Current Curriculum ● Too narrowly focused ● Clear goals were difficult to interpret ● Resources were lacking at early elementary ● EE, LE, MS, HS goals were not grade specific

3 Goals ● Clearly defined curriculum at each grade level(GLCE) ● Resources to support the curriculum ● Articulated Scope and Sequence K-12 ● Improve state-wide test results ● Improved communication of available resources

4 How Do We Get There? ● Identify areas of weakness ● 3 year MEAP analysis ● Investigate Resources ● Pilot texts—National Geographic, Harcourt Brace, McDougall- Littell

5 Weak Areas ● Civics and Economics across 5, 8, and 11 MEAP ● Four Strands of Social Studies focus: History, Geography, Civics and Economics ● Core Democratic values and five themes of geography embedded within these strands at all levels.

6 Changes ● Introduced economics/civics and core democratic values to all elementary grades ● 2 nd grade cultures expanded to compare with local community ● 3 rd grade focus on comparing local community and other regions of the U.S. ● Study of regions extended to all elementary grades ● 4 th grade focus on Michigan studies ● U.S. History moved from 11 th grade to 10 th grade ● 11 grade Global Issues course to be added (2005) ● 12 AP Government added (2005)

8 District Communication ● Beginning of year inservice regarding revised curriculum ● Staff views MDE website, MIEPIC website, and ScoPE website ● Communication regarding civics/econ and CDV focus ● Discuss other available materials ● Hand out purchased resources/posters ● MEAP Prototype awareness and use

9 Did we achieve our goals? ● Clearly defined curriculum—GLCE's are available in draft form—will check in fall for final draft ● Resources to support—Available web resources, Virginia Inc. books—Delayed purchase for texts, existing curriculum ● Articulated Scope and Sequence—yes ● Improve state-wide test results--?????? ● Improved communication--yes

10 Continued Work ● Update the GCLE as they become available ● Provide information on ScoPE units as they become available ● Continue to analyze MEAP results to determine progress
