What is the Internet? A collection of local, regional, national, and international computer networks that are linked together to exchange data and distribute processing tasks

Web Browser A software program that runs on your computer and helps you access Web pages Internet Explorer and Netscape are web browsers

Internet Service Provider (ISP) A company that has the equipment to provide Internet access to businesses, organizations, and individuals Examples: AOL, Juno, AT&T

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) Sometime referred to as the web address Example: www.usu.edu “www” stands for World Wide Web Most common domain examples: –.com –.edu –.gov –.org –.net

Navigating the Net Toolbar buttons provide many options: back, forward, home, stop, refresh, etc. Hypertext links – links to related documents, web pages, and media files

Security Many sites containing sensitive information use encryption to protect this information (i.e. banks) Encryption is the most effective way to achieve data security –Messages are sent in a secret code and can only be read by the receiving web site with the decryption key. When giving out personal information, check the security of the web site.

E-mail Productive tool for communicating and sharing information, but can be misused Examples of inappropriate e-mail use include: –Spamming – Bulk, mass, or repeated posting or mailing of substantially identical messages. –Flaming – A public post or email message that expresses a strong opinion or criticism. –Trolling – An inflammatory post that is designed to provoke a flame war or flame responses. Messages that continue after the recipient asks that they stop or that are threatening or intimidating are illegal.

Netiquette Treat people with the same respect and integrity you would during a face- to-face encounter Do not use offensive language, and avoid sending flaming email or engaging in flaming chat in chat rooms or on bulletin boards
