Who I am Member of Region 3, Atlanta Section Professor of ECE at Georgia Tech for 21 years in the field of electric machines and power electronics. Very passionate about IEEE. My enthusiasm stems in part, from its demonstrable effects on my career. Slide 9Region 2 MD Web Cast
10
Goals Clearly, my IEEE-life has been in TAB. MRR may be an MGA cmte, but it is an IEEE- wide function. We need to always think of it that way. But, member recruitment and retention reaches equally across both MGA and TAB. We need TAB and MGA working together to help engage members in finding their IEEE home. My goal is to make section, region, and society MD chairs aligned partners in recruitment. Slide 10Region 2 MD Web Cast
11
Goals We know that primary reason to join is to stay technically current. We must use the technical pubs and networking of the societies to help the sections attract members. At the same time, society memberships are decreasing. Societies have a pressing interest in bolstering membership. Slide 11Region 2 MD Web Cast
12
Key Issues for retention Focus on the Member –Members are partners, not customers or clients. –Many of our members are struggling to stay current. Engaging industry members –Bringing conferences and other products to the local level and the desktop Cannot just be a knowledge community, but embrace other types of community. Engage volunteers more immediately Slide 12Region 2 MD Web Cast

The Terminator Action Members who didn’t renew for 2009 till the end of 2008 continued to have all the member benefits during January and February 2009. Such members are named “Pre-Arrears” At the end of February, after the Terminator Action, all the Pre-Arrears who didn’t renew are sorted out, their member benefits, rights and privilages are deactivated (they don’t receive the journals anymore) and they are named “Arrears” Starting from the beginning of March all members renewing for 2009 are transfered from the list of Arrears to the list of Active Members and their member benefits, rights and privilages are activated again instantaneously (they receive again the journals) Region 2 MD Webcast Web Cast Etiquette: Ask questions using the online chat feature.
