The absolute location of the Hunan province is 108'47"-114'13" east longitude and 24'38"-30'08" north latitude. The relative location of Hunan is that it is north of Guangxi and Guangdong, East of Guizhou, West of Jiangxi, and South Hubei.

The main bodies of water are the Dongting Lake and the Yangtze River. Some landforms of Hunan are the Nan Mountains and the Heng Shan Mountains.

The climate of the Hunan province is a sub- tropical climate with short cold winters and long hot summers. Hunan has a wide range of fauna, including such large mammals as tigers, leopards, wolves, and deer.

Hunan is home to groves of bamboo, camphor, and cedar are usually found around villages.

The coldest month is January. For hundreds of years thereafter 350 BC, it was a magnet for migration of Han Chinese from the north. Hunan became an important communications center due to its position on the Yangzi River.
