From Republic to Empire 1.Create a timeline of 16 important events that took place as Rome moved from Republic to Empire. 2.Work as a group to define and describe the way in which power has changed during this time period. a)What defines and creates power in the Republic and how is it now different in the Roman Empire? b)What happens to people with power? How are individuals affected, influenced, and changed by power in Rome? c)Do you think this is a result of human nature? Does“absolute power corrupts absolutely”?

Brainstorming and Discussion Is a government led by a dictator or Emperor inherently bad? Is an autocratic ruler more effective in bringing about change than a democratic government? Is there such a thing as a benevolent dictator? Is the essence of a good ruler rooted in gaining, expanding, and consolidating power, or in improving society for all? Of the leaders you have studied in this or other courses give an example of a “good ruler” and a “bad ruler”. Why did you choose these rulers?
