Mercury During the day temperatures can reach over 800° F. Mercury is 36 million miles away from the Sun. Mercury was named for the swift Roman God.

Venus Temperatures can climb to 900° F. Venus was named for the Roman Goddess of love. The Chinese name for Venus means “beautiful white one”.

Earth Earth is 93 million miles away from the Sun. It is the only planet with plants and animals. Earth is not too hot and not too cold.

Mars Mars was named for the Roman God. Mars is 141 million miles from the Sun. It is made up of 95% carbon dioxide.

Jupiter Jupiter is 483 million miles away from the Sun. Jupiter is twice as large as the other 8 planets. There is a large red spot on Jupiter that may be a giant storm.

Saturn Saturn is 887 million miles away from the Sun. Because of the extreme cold, the gases have frozen and formed crystals, makes the visible. The rings are made of bits of ice and rock.

Uranus Uranus rotates in the opposite direction of the other 4 outer planets. Uranus is 1 billion, 783 million miles from the Sun. A thick haze covers the planet.

Neptune Neptune is 2 billion, 794 million miles from the Sun. The planet is covered with clouds. Winds on the surface of Neptune reach 600 miles per hour.

Pluto Pluto is a dwarf planet. Pluto is 666 million miles from the Sun. Pluto has 1 moon, “Charon”.
