2. CONNOTATION Connotation- an idea or the emotions implied by a word rather than it being described Examples: When saying home sweet home, the word home gives a connotation of safety and comfort. When thinking of Christmas it gives a connotation of happiness.

3. NARRATION Narration- the act of telling or giving commentary on a story Examples: He walked to lunch and then sat down at the table. She is watching TV while doing her homework.

4. ANAPHORA Anaphora- the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of every successive clause or verse Examples: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” –Charles Dickens “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender.”-Winston Churchill

ACTIVITY Decide if each is an example of connotation, narration, or anaphora. 1.“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right…” –Abraham Lincoln 2.Using the word bossy instead of calling someone a leader. 3.He is pleading guilty for robbing the bank. 4.Calling someone cheap instead of thrifty. 5.After leaving the store the girl bought lunch. 6.“Freedom of religion, freedom to speak their mind, freedom to build a life and, yes, freedom to build a business with their own hands.” –Mitt Romney
