2. ~ Early Life ~ Dorothea at 7 contracted Polio. It weakened her left leg and foot, but she never gave up. Dorothea states “It was the most important thing that happened to me, and formed me, guided me, instructed me, helped me and humiliated me.” When she was about 10, her parents divorced. She was convinced it was her dads fault and so she decided to take her mothers maiden name, Lange. During her high school years Dorothea started to show an interest in photography and decided to pursue it as a profession.

3. ~ About Her ~ Born: May 26, 1895 Education: studied art form at Columbia University. Work/Jobs: First started out as an apprentice for Arnold Genthe, Then later started to take photos with her husband (Maynard Dixon), then later took pictures of farmers and the poor, during the Great Depression. Style: Documentary photographer Why: She began to show interest in this style after taking photos of native Americans on a trip with her husband. She wanted to capture the Great Depression threw the eyes of the victims.

4. ~ Now ~ One of Dorothea’s most famous photo is the Migrant Mother. Which is displayed in the Library of Congress's Many people enjoyed her work because she was very specific on what/who she took the photo of. Her pictures showed what was going on from a different perspective.

5. Migrant Mother In 1936 at Nipomo, California 1.The lighting used is natural. It is coming on almost directly. The light shines perfectly on her face. 2.The main subject of this photo is the mom. When you look at the photo the first thing you she is her. 3.This photo is so appealing because of the leading lines and the angle of the photo. If you look closely everything is leading towards the woman, her arm is angled towards her face and where her kids are placed. 4.I think that Dorothea was trying to show what the mom was thinking without telling you. She looks tired, worried and worn-out. 5.I chose this photo because I loved the way Dorothea captured the sad and gloominess of the time period but still has interesting and appealing qualities.

6. White Angel Breadline San Francisco 1933 1.The lighting in this picture is natural. The lighting is coming from the upper right. 2.The main subject of the photo is the man with the tin cup. He is the only one turned around and the camera is focused on him. 3.I think this photo is so striking because of how the man is standing. Everything in his background looks the same, and there is him standing there doing something different than everyone else. 4.I think that Dorothea is trying to show the difference in him. 5.This photo makes you ant to know more about that person. Where they are from, why they are there.

7. Picture 3 southern California, early 1930’s 1.The lighting in this photo is artificial. The lighting is coming from behind her, to the left. 2.The main subject is the girl because that is the first thing you see when you look at the picture. 3.This picture is appealing because of the leading lines. The floor boards, the lighting, the bench and the window all lead to her. 4.I think Dorothea is trying to show all the things this girl has lost. She has nothing to do but stare at the empty fireplace. 5.I chose this photo because I liked the angle it was taken from, I really liked the light shinning in on the girl.

8. Picture 4 Early 1930’s 1.The lighting in this photo is natural. The lighting shines directly on them. 2.The main subject is the man and baby on the horse. They are close to the camera and your eyes look directly there. 3.This picture is appealing because of all the objects. There is so much for you to look at. 4.I think Dorothea is trying to communicate the life of farmer during the Great Depression. 5.I chose this picture because I like how there is so much to see.

9. Picture 5 early 1930s 1.The lighting in this picture is natural. The lighting is shinning down through the tree. 2.The main subject is the children. They are the main focus when you look at this picture. 3.This photo is so appealing because of the things in the background. It makes you look at the picture for a while. 4.I think Dorothea is trying to show people what everyday life was for these people. 5.I chose this photo because I like busy pictures and this photo had a lot to show.

10. Picture 6 October 1939, Idaho 1.The lighting in this picture is natural. The lighting is kind of overcast, so the light is shinning everywhere. 2.The main subject of the photo is the mailboxes and the sign. 3.This photo is so striking because of the background and all the neat objects. 4.I think that Dorothea took this photo to show like a fork in the road. Where do you go next? 5.I picked this photo because I like interesting photos that make you think about them.. This picture had a lot of detail.
