Ch. 6Sec. 3 Naming compounds and writing formulas
2
Compounds & Formulas Names of the compound will distinguish it from other compounds with the same elements The formula shows the ratio of the element involved Subscript follows element symbol: NO 2
3
Binary Ionic Compounds compound made form only two elements Name of the cation followed by name of the anion Latin prefix: bi- (means two: bicycle) Nonmetal suffix: -ide hydrogen - hydrideoxygen - oxide nitrogen - nitridefluorine - fluoride phosphorus - phosphidechlorine - chloride bromine - bromideiodine - iodide sulfur – sulfide
4
Polyatomic Ions group of covalent bonded atoms that act like a single ionic atom that combines with other atoms. NH 4 +1 ammoniumNO 3 -1 nitrate C 2 H 3 O 2 -1 acetateNO 2 -1 nitrite ClO 3 -1 chlorateCO 3 -2 carbonate HCO 3 -1 bicarbonateSO 4 -2 sulfate OH -1 hydroxideSO 3 -2 sulfite PO 4 -3 phosphate
5
Naming Compounds Uses prefixes. Examples: N 2 O dinitrogen oxide NO nitrogen oxide NO 2 nitrogen dioxide N 2 O 5 dinitrogen pentoxide
6
Writing Chemical Formulas 2 iron, 3 oxygen = Fe 2 O 3 6 carbon, 12 hydrogen, 6 oxygen = C 6 H 12 O 6 2 hydrogen, 2 oxygen = H 2 O 2 1 nitrogen, 3 hydrogen = NH 3 A chemical formula shows the ratio of atoms used to make the compound.
