1
Network Components Basics!
2
Network HUB Used to connect multiple Ethernet devices together Layer 1 of the OSI model Not used much today
3
Bringing it all together
4
Network Switch Similar in appearance to a hub Connects network devices together using packet switching Layer 2 of the OSI model Advanced switching that have some routing capabilities are known as “layer 3 switches”
5
Network Router Forwards packets between different computer networks Most homes and small offices use routers to connect to the internet (typically the router is connected to a cable or dsl modem) Layer 3 of the OSI model
6
Network Bridge Used to join two or more networks that use the same protocols Layers 1 & 2 of the OSI model
7
Gateway Connects two or more networks that use different protocols Can run at any layer in the OSI model
8
Firewall Acts as a barrier to keep unwanted traffic and users from your network Operating systems can have their own built in firewalls to protect themselves Can be found in network devices such as switches or can be installed as applications running on servers Normally can be found at OSI layers 1 through 4
9
Wireless Access Point Provides network access for portable devise. Commonly known as “Wi-Fi” Often integrated with a home based router Can also be used to extend the range of a wireless network
