1 Birmingham Public Schools A K-12 Narrative of Social Studies Education in 2015

2 Fifth Grade

3 A typical fifth grade classroom has 2-3 LRC kids with disabilities from Learning Disabilities in reading, writing, math to Otherwise Health Impaired (for Example ADD, ADHD, Autism, EI, etc.). The student we have chose is an African American boy aged 10. He is LD and has a language processing disorder.

4 Conditions Social Studies class takes place approximately 40 minutes two to three days per week. Resources – TCI with a couple guest speakers each year. Some classes utilize CCN Student News and/or social studies related read aloud novels. Yes, resources are aligned to standards. Print resources are easy to use for the teacher and student, but the website login process is a bit tedious.

6 Foundational Skills & Concepts Map skills Research Group work Writing with claim, evidence, reasoning and synthesis Reading nonfiction text

7 Assessment Strategies Multiple choice tests Presentations Group projects Research projects Assessments come from TCI, websites such as Teachers Pay Teachers, and are teacher created The elementary does not have common assessments at the elementary level, but teachers in the same school generally use the same assessment. Tests are modified in length and/or content for our special needs students and typically administered in a small group setting if it’s a paper & pencil task.
