2 Education and Training : – Primary Goal: Ensure that all data are fully utilized immediately following start of operations Major training venues: Schools, universities, workshops, conferences, online; Training must be tailored to meet unique user needs: - NWS forecasters - FAA meteorologists - Coastal service centers - Broadcast meteorologists - University faculty - Commercial and industry - International - Climatologists - Numerical modelers (weather, climate, air quality, oceans)
3
3 Decision Aids: – Needed to focus user attention Cannot possibly look at all GOES-R data Examples from WSR-88D include TVS and VIL –Possible GOES-R Decision Aids: Rapid de-stabilization indicated on HES Sounder products ABI cloud patterns or HES moisture profiles markedly different from NWP Satellite derived winds markedly different from NWP Alert for fog/ low cloud formation Enhanced V detection GLM indication increasing lightning flash rate Alert for red tide on HES coastal waters imagery
4
4 Proving Ground Concept for GOES-R: – Fund 1 extra person at 3 NWS forecast offices FY 08 – Fy 16 Test and apply algorithms for hyperspectral polar data; - CrIS; AIRS; IASI; Simulated GOES-R; Use available Geo satellites for temporal resolution; Test decision aid tools in operational setting;
5
5 Algorithm Development: – Reduced risk through development of the Algorithm Working
